The Day I Got My Tripod

I am a little obsessed with night photography. Ok not a little. A lot. I have never been able to try it myself before because I didn't have a tripod, and tripods are kinda necessary for night photos. So, guess what I did. That's right Captain Obvious, I bought a tripod. It is already in my top five favorite as well as most useful purchases. Here are a bunch of pics I took, all in my backyard. Some of them were taken before today, but only these first few. All these pictures were shot using a Nikon D3000.

Ready....set.....front flip!!!

This is my FAVORITE!

I kept having problems with the pictures turning out reddish...as I'm sure you noticed. I kept adjusting the white balance and it didn't seem to do anything....hopefully I can figure out how to fix it with the camera settings so I don't have to fix all of them later in photoshop. Also the lights all look like bursts. Kinda cool but hopefully I can figure out how to fix that too. Anyway, first attempt at night photography almost a success :)

There Is No [wh]Y in Happiness

Today has been a sick day. I don't mind sick days as long as they are only once in a while. It forces people to rest and take care of themselves, which many people can't afford to do on a regular basis, depending on their job, school, or family situation. Or a combination of two or all of them. Anyway, sick days give me a lot of time to think. The things I see, read, hear, or do provoke a more intensive, deep thought process than they normally would. That may be a side effect of whatever type of meds I take for that particular problem, but I like to think it's more of my brain being more active and compensating for when my body has to be  more inactive. I have read a few things today that really caught my attention.

Number One: I ordered a fitness DVD called BBX Hardcore that finally arrived in the mail. It comes with a booklet with an entire 90 day meal plan, recipes, life coaching, stuff like that. One part that hit me said:

"You can't focus on the negative. You can't dwell on the wrong that you have done, or what other people have done to you; how crappy you feel, or how bad you think you look, or how nothing ever goes right for you. By focusing on the negative, you keep yourself there and so continues a very vicious cycle. Change begins with, ends with, and can only happen within you." -Dede Barbantts

Pretty deep for a fitness DVD huh?

Number Two: I started reading this book called "Broken for You" by Stephanie Kallos. I am only 34 pages into it, but it has already got me thinking. One part talks about how one of the characters read a book about writing down affirmations and says:

"If Wanda felt like writing, 'Nobody will ever love me again,' which, according to the book's author, was a lie, she wrote instead, 'A loving relationship awaits me.' If Wanda felt like writing, 'All men are [messed up jerks] who deserve to die,' she forced her hand into a steady calmness and wrote instead, 'There are good men in the world, somewhere.' If she felt like writing, '[Screw] the survival of the species. The world would be better off if humans became extinct,' she wrote, 'Save the whales.' And if she felt her spooks coming on, those familiar voices that said, 'You're going to die alone. People started leaving you when you were six years old and they're going to keep leaving you, so why bother?' she would print, as if she were competing for a penmanship prize, 'I love myself. I. Love. Myself. I do not need another person's love to make me whole.'"

Stephanie Kallos used relationships in that particular part of the book to describe affirmations, but I think it is actually a useful technique that can be applied to any situation. If you constantly tell yourself you are going to fail or that you are going nowhere, then that it what will happen to you. If you tell yourself you amazing and will succeed at whatever it is you put your mind to, then you will. I firmly believe we are our greatest roadblocks in life. We are the only thing holding ourselves back from reaching our full potential. We can spend all our time blaming God or the people around us, but in the end, deep down we all know that the blame really falls on us.

Number Three: I was watching Community since I ran out of other things to watch and the character Jeff, played by Joel McHale said:

"He has nothing to prove or disprove about himself or to himself. He has no shame because he didn't care if you knew. We can't keep going to each other until we learn to go to ourselves. We need to stop turning our hatred of ourselves into someones else's job and just stop hating ourselves."

Now, taken out of context it doesn't make tons of sense. And granted, Community is about stupid humor and being sarcastic most of the time. But what I got from it was that the reason we sometimes hate ourselves is because we feel like we have to prove ourselves in comparison to those around us. We constantly compare our shortcomings to other people's strengths and beat ourselves up for NO GOOD REASON. I read somewhere once something along the lines of, "Would you be friends with someone who talked to you the way you talk to yourself." Essentially, if someone criticized you and was as hard on you as you are on yourself, you probably wouldn't want to be around them. We should all cut ourselves some slack every now and then. Nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone has room for improvement, no matter how old they are. We should all try to be more positive and nicer to ourselves and the people around us. I think that is one thing that could help us all in the pursuit of happiness. And as Will Smith says ON The Pursuit of Happyness,
"There is no [wh]Y in happiness."

It's Time to Talk Politics...Kinda

I saw this video during the previews of The Five Year Engagement. I love Jason Segel. Anyway, they showed this video called Bad Lip Reading and it was pretty funny. I couldn't find the exact video but here are some that they took clips from.

I guess they gotta get people interested in politics somehow lol.

Blah....Blah....BLAH...and a Cute Baby

In case you couldn't tell from the title, today has been freakin BLAH. I have hated almost every single second of it. Got woken up freakin early thinking my little sister Cat had been kidnapped (but then later found out my other sister Leann had taken her to school without being able to get a hold of her carpool to tell them). Then worked was a supreme suckfest. More so than it's been in a long long time. Nothing, well almost nothing, went right. Ugh. AND Poor Leann had to wait in the blazing sun for about an hour for me to come pick her up because the project I was working on at work took freakin forever so I got off late.

THEN

I got about two hours peace in my room, which was the perfect kind of cold and perfect lighting (lighting is a big deal okay). I spent those two hours watching Arrested Development. Love. The more you watch it the more it grows on you. Trust me.

THEN

My poor sister Leann had sliced her finger open at her internship at Chef's Table and by this point it was bleeding profusely and hurt super bad. (Click on her name for a link to the story). SO we took her to the Instacare and she had to get stitches. It gave me flashbacks of when I was like 8 or something and had to get stitches in my finger. No bueno.

The one good thing that happened though was I went to the store to get Leann Twizzlers and Nutella, and they had the Calypso Lemonade in stock that I wanted :) Yay. Peach Lemonade is de-freakin-licious.

All I have to say at this point is that while my day sucked, Leann's was worse so I shouldn't be upset anymore. After an hour of searching I FINALLY found my headphones, finally synced my iPod for the first time in forever, and got some laundry done. At least I can end the day on a good note.

ALSO

Totally random but my sister Brittany takes super fantastic pictures and you should check them out. Click on her name to see them. I have one of the pics she took of her baby Milo as my background and it literally makes me go "Awwww" every time I see it. So go look at her blog if you wanna see really good pictures of a really cute baby.

That's all :)

The Country Side of Me

I have always loved the idea of living out in the country. Big open fields. Cute, run down barns. Horses everywhere. Not to mention country boys lol. Obviously the country has it's downsides, but I think living near the country would be nice. As long as there were still enough things to do close by of course. I love concerts and shopping so you can't be too deep in the country lol.

I grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah. For those of you who don't know, Spanish Fork is a small town compared to most other cities in Utah (and it is not just the place where they have the Hare Krishna Festival of Colors lol). I love it. And of course, it was where I grew up so I have tons of memories there. One of my favorite memories was going to the baseball/softball park and playing, and watching my sisters play, softball. In Spanish Fork, softball is a pretty big deal. Almost everyone there plays it, or knows someone who plays it, including me and three of my sisters at one point or another.

There's something about summer nights that make me happy, and watching softball on summer nights makes me even happier. Even though we don't live in Spanish Fork anymore my sister Tara still drives down there to play softball on the adult city league with some of her friends who still live there.

I am super stoked because she has decided to play again this summer, so I get to watch her play at least one more year :). I'm glad because it gives me an excuse to head back down to there and spend more summer nights watching softball. Plus she's super good at it and I like to watch her dominate the other teams.

I am planning on taking some pics of my "hometown" when I go down there again. I don't know what exactly people are supposed to consider their hometown, but I lived in Spanish Fork for 9 straight years and did most of my growing up there, so I consider it my hometown. Anyway, keep an eye out for those pictures, hopefully they turn out good.

Here is Rascal Flatts' song Summer Nights. It got stuck in my head while I was writing this.
